My recent reading habits have pointed me mostly towards books that are fiction and are relatively easy to digest. This could get kind of monotonous though, so when I got the opportunity to review the audiobook version of A Thousand Beauties I thought to myself ‘Huh, that looks a little different from what I usually read. Why not, it might be good.’

It’s one of those books that no matter what is going to make you feel something. Whether you’re annoyed sometimes with the characters, as I was, or relating to their problems, you won’t be able to stay indifferent. So, if you’re looking for a quick feel-good type of read that’s not it. Read the rest of this entry

I’ve never attempted to get into the Robert Jordan Wheel of Time series which although looking interesting seems like a huge time investment. I feel like I’ll be reading them a whole year or something. Actually, one of the first books by Sanderson that got me hooked were the ones from the Mistborn Trilogy (I’ll take a trilogy any time – much more easy to tackle).

The story and the way it was written was very engaging. The Way of Kings audiobook costs two credits on Audible which was the reason I didn’t get it right away but I finally bit the bullet. I’ve been craving something as captivating as Mistborn was and when I hit the Play button immediately knew I shouldn’t have waited. The Way of Kings is worth the price even if you’re not an Audible subscriber and looks like it’s going to be another excellent series from Sanderson. The Way of Kings is Book 1 of the Stormlight Archive which is planed as a ten-novel series. Oh, boy. Read the rest of this entry

Gravity Pulls Through Audiobook Review

written by James Hitchins, music by Alvine Spetz, narrated by Keith Allen

Gravity Pulls Through by James Hitchins and Alvine Spetz, narrated by Keith Allen

I love short fiction and especially short sci-fi stories! When done right they’re so powerful and engaging and just make you think! Gravity Pulls Through is such a story for me. It’s very well written with some witty dialogue and complemented by some (a little weird) music by Alvin Spetz which makes it so much more unique. I don’t think I’ve encountered another audiobook that has short song breaks throughout the story. I found it a little strange at first but the more I think of it, the more I like the idea. I don’t know if I’d prefer my novels that way, but for the short story format it certainly works well. Read the rest of this entry

I’ve been thinking about reading some classic literature for some time now, and what better book to start with than The Brothers Karamazov. There’re multiple audiobook versions available, both abridged and unabridged, so you’ll have lots of choice of how to consume it. I went for the 2009 abridged edition narrated by Simon Vance. It’s almost 20 hours long which is the perfect sweetspot for me. The full version is something like 40 hours long, so…

Unlike your typical abridged audiobook, this one seems to shorten things on word and phrase level rather then cut out whole scenes or chapters. A word removed here, change of phrasing there and it all adds up with the end result being about 50% shorter than the original. It’s more of a compression than an abridgment. Sure, you’re loosing some of the feel of the original, but you’re presented with a carefully crafted piece, not some hack job. The famous The Grand Inquisitor chapter is still there in all of its glory, for example. Read the rest of this entry

I personally don’t believe in ghosts and never have seen one or know anybody who has. That said I enjoy a good scary story and even the occasional horror film. If done right ghosts can be very scary even though they’re invisible. In fact, maybe they’re so scary because they’re invisible. We humans like to see things, it’s how we perceive the world. The possibility that there’re creatures in it that we can’t see but they can see and hurt us is understandably blood-chilling. So, of course when I saw Haunted Louisiana I was intrigued. Calling it a novel may be a little bit of a stretch as it is a little over two hours long – a novelette, maybe? Read the rest of this entry

I saw lots of people raving about how good The Ocean at the End of the Lane audiobook is and decided to check it out for myself. When a new book by Neil Gaiman comes out it’s always a big event. After all he’s notoriously good fantasy writer, has a huge fanbase and generally people expect an excellent book when they see his name on the cover. Everybody’s been wondering what Gaiman’s going to do next in the last few years. An American Gods TV series? A sequel to Odd and the Frost Giant? A prequel to his Sandman comic? To be honest, there was a little bit of skepticism in me about Gaiman doing something unoriginal, we’ve already seen. I didn’t want that. I needed something new and exciting. I had big expectations for this audiobook when I stumbled upon it while browsing. It seemed very promising and largely lived up to my expectation with a few exceptions.
What Geomancer is about: Tiaan is a crystal worker who makes controllers, intricate components that control huge war machines. She lives in a world exhausted by a war against a winged race called the lyrinx. Everyone in society has their role in supporting the war effort, and if you don’t have any particular abilities which can be useful, you get sent to the front lines if you’re a man, or used as breeding specimen, giving birth to the next generation of soldiers, if you’re a woman. When Tiaan is falsely accused of sabotage, she finds herself on the run and looking for a man she’s seen in her crystal visions, her true love. Read the rest of this entry

You know how it happens. A big-budget Holywood movie comes out, makes a bunch of money for the studio and of course they want to squeeze every last dollar possible. So naturally as a part of the modern publishing process, they make a book version of the movie and release it after the flick is in the cinemas. It keeps up the hype and can be a good secondary income stream. Generally speaking these books aren’t that good but thankfully they don’t do novelizations for all movies that come out. On the cover it says it’s based on the movie, but what really that means is it’s based on the movie script.

Hounded is the first audiobook in The Iron Druid Chronicles series which is an urban fantasy by the relatively new author Kevin Hearne. We’re presented with a story that follows the magical adventures of the world’s last druid Atticus in modern day Arizona.

Forget about all those silly old men in robes with long white beards. Atticus definitely doesn’t fit in that stereotype, being a 21 year old youngster with red hair, a goatee and the palest skin you’re ever seen. One might think that Arizona won’t be the first choice for a place of residence for someone like him, because you know, it’s constantly sunny and hot and dessert-y. He, however has a few good reasons for choosing the USA South. The Celtic god of love Aenghus Og is after him and not because he has deep feelings for Atticus but because he’s convinced that the druid stole a magical sword that belongs to him. It turns out that Arizona is as far away from the fae gateways to the Old World which makes it difficult for the gods and their minions to catch him by surprise. Read the rest of this entry

The Lost Fleet: Dauntless by Jack Campbell is a military sci-fi novel and the first book in The Lost Fleet series. He was considered dead after his heroic last stand against enemy spaceships, allowing the remaining Alliance fleet ships escape.
