I started listening to The Martian with no particular expectations, other than the occasional high praises from other reviews I’ve glanced over online and my memories of the print version of the book. As it turns out, not only was it good enough to deserve a place in my personal collection, but it also got me out of the reading slump I’ve been in for some time. I felt excited about reading again. I think it takes a special kind of book to do that.
The book is basically the diary of Mark Watney – an astronaut who gets stuck on Mars after an accident. The fact that it’s just one guy, making a log of his days on Mars for whoever finds it makes this book very, very well suited for an audiobook. It feels like you’re there, while he’s making the recording, describing the days’s events. It’s a natural fit for the audio medium.
I thoroughly enjoyed R. C. Bray’s narration. I’ve read the print version previously and his voice didn’t immediately sound to me like I imagined it in my mind I (less deep-voice-tough-guy and more of a funny-kind-of-nerdy-guy) but it still was a very good narration. His intonation was on point and he just brings out the persona of the character extremely well. I had a couple of laugh out loud moments with the one liners Watney likes to drop from time to time.
I would have been very disappointed to see this great story ruined by bad editing or technical flaws of the recording. Thankfully no such thing happened – it’s excellent from start to finish. Even if you aren’t that into audiobooks, I highly recommend you to get the print or ebook version. Andy Weir has really done something wonderful here – a unique space adventure, that’s based on hard science, packs lots of humor and shows what to be human means. That is to never give up, even in the face of incomprehensible odds, and to help others.
