Brave New World

Length: Blackstone Audio Inc.

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: January 16, 2008

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Throughout the generations, times have changed. Some books have grown less popular and this is a major mistake. By looking into the past and examining a handful of classic novels, it is possible to experience the future. Although George Orwell is likely best known for realistically capturing the future, Aldous Huxley should also be credited for his book, Brave New World, which does the same! The book delves into many societal problems, which are predominant today. Drugs, anti-aging schemes, social control and media manipulation are all present.

The Outsiders

Written by: S.E. Hinton

Narrated by: Jim Fyfe

Length: 5 hours and 12 minutes

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: July 22, 2004

Publisher: Listening Library

There are many excellent novels that will stick with you for many years. Some of these are a little less modern and their settings are somewhat irrelevant to today’s society. There are few that could interpret today’s society better than S.E. Hinton’s The Outsiders. The story could very well take place in today’s urban America. The tale of brotherhood and childhood rivalries is intense, touching and uplifting. If you’ve never read the book, you might want to consider checking out the audiobook, which is narrated by Jim Fyfe.

Over the years, there have been several authors, who have been able to captivate consecutive generations. With his dystopian novels, which borderline on conspiracy theories, George Orwell has managed to remain a popular figure in mainstream media. Although his novel, 1984, is likely his most cited work, Animal Farm is also well worth checking out. His humorous take on the Russian Revolution is enjoyable from page to page and will keep the reader engaged all the way to the conclusion.

Over the years, there have been some outstanding novels, which have withstood the test of time. While some have perished, others have gone on to be adapted into films and audiobooks. Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is undoubtedly one of the best-recognized classics. This book, which was previously published in 1953, was written during the great book burning scandal in the United States. Although the writer later changed his tune, the previous statement is more intriguing. Now, the book is available in audiobook format and it is a real treat!

To Kill a Mockingbird

Written by: Harper Lee

Narrated by: Sissy Spacek

Length: 12 hrs and 17 mins

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 07-08-14

Publisher: Harper Audio

To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic book for many reasons. It tells a story of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl. Most people have already read it at some point either by choice or because they had to for their schoolwork. It wasn’t included in our high school literature classes, which is fine because I don’t think I would’ve appreciated it as much as I do now. Considering I’m generally not a huge classics fan (some of them are really overrated) I’m glad to have the To Kill a Mockingbird audiobook in my collection as I’ll probably re-read it again at some point.

I’ve never actually read the original Legend of Sleepy Hollow until now, so this audiobook rendition was my first experience with the American classic. If you like me happen to have not read the legend, it tells the story of Ichabod Crane – a teacher in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, more often called by its’ residents as Sleepy Hollow. He among other men from the town is courting Katrina Van Tassel – the young and only daughter of a wealthy farmer.

Pride and Prejudice – the 200th Anniversary Audio Edition

Written by: Jane Austen

Narrated by: Alison Larkin

Length: 13 hrs and 21 mins

Format: Unabridged

Release Date:10-31-13

Publisher: BMA and British Classic Audio

So we have another classic book here at the Audiobook Jungle. Quite a different work from The Brothers Karamazov, which was the last classic audiobook I reviewed. Let’s start with some expectation adjustment. Modern readers have certain expectations of books. The writing style, the plot structure, the themes are all done differently done nowadays than when the novel was first published in 1813. Heck, that was two full centuries ago! Even the language sounds different. This is my recommendation for everyone that is going to read Pride and Prejudice or classic literature in general – expect it to be different.
