Are you the type of individual, who absolutely loves a good medieval tale? I certainly am and I can tell you that the majority of movies and films fail to do the source material justice. This is especially true, when it comes to The Return of the King, which is the third book, within the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Although the entire trilogy is absolutely enthralling and ravishing, there is something truly special about the third book, which helps to make it one of the best in the entire series. Those, who’ve already experienced the previous two additions, will definitely want to consider dropping the paperback and making the transition to The Return of the King audiobook.

Unabridged Audiobook

I absolutely love fantasy novels, which involve creatures from another world, glorious battles and plenty of medieval drama. There are plenty of novels, which attempt to follow this route, but not all of them are flawless. J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings series is undeniably one of the most successful and popular fantasy tales of all times. The Two Towers audiobook is the midpoint in the story and the second book in the series, which extends over three books. Tolkien is an absolute master, when it comes to fantasy and this is more than evident, with The Two Towers. The novel is fantastical, very dramatic and uplifting in all of the right places. You can check out the reviews for the first and third book here and here, respectively.

Over the years, the world has seen a diverse collection of fantasy epics. Many of these tales follow the same routine and yet manage to individualize themselves in some form of another. This is especially true, when it comes to J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. This is the first book, within The Lord of the Rings series, and it is still considered by many to be the best of all. In fact, some critics and readers suggest that the book is one of the best within the entire genre. No matter where you stand in this argument, it is truly hard to deny that fact that The Fellowship of the Ring is a treasurable and truly unique experience, especially in audiobook form, which should never be avoided.

Urban fantasy usually lends itself pretty well to the audiobook format, so I expected to have a nice experience with Dark Hope. For the most part, my expectations were met. It’s a good fantasy story that I found enjoyable enough so although I took a couple of breaks from it, I didn’t abandon it and listened till the end. If you’re a UF fan, this could be a series worth getting into.

Superheroes in Prose: Welcome to Prose is a fun little audiobook that will get a few chuckles out of you, or at least it did it for me. I didn’t have any expectations for it and the title of the book sounded a little strange to me especially the Prose part. Turns out it’s the name of the fictional city where there’s an unusual clustering of superheroes per capita. This audiobook is really just the set up for the series and introduces the main superheroes that clash in epic battles with the city of Prose as the backdrop.

High Moor

Written by: Graeme Reynolds

Narrated by: Chris Barnes

Length: 7 hrs and 15 mins

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 10-21-13

Publisher: Dynamic Ram Audio Production

Graeme Reynolds has been writing for a few years now (since 2008 to be exact) and has had more than thirty short stories published in various online magazines and anthologies. In 2011 his first novel, High Moor, was published.

What is High Moor about

If you didn’t guess from the cover, High Moor is a book about werewolves. What you get from the blurb doesn’t do the story justice and makes it look like just another urban fantasy/paranormal mind candy novel. The plot is actually fairly complex for a werewolf story and there are some nice twists and turns. Two of the main characters, John Simpson and Steven Wilkinson have to deal with a dangerous werewolf. That much we get even from the book blurb. There’s much more to it, though. This part of the plot unfolds halfway into the book. Before that there’s some solid character building and we see John as a child living through some horrible events and a little younger version of police officer Steven Wilkinson being hit by the reality that werewolves exist. We get to know them quite well and develop a solid relationship with them which makes the final moments of the book even more exciting.

Who is the author

Dora Machado, the author of the Stonewiser trilogy is relatively new to the fantasy scene, at least that’s what I gathered from looking her up online. At the time of posting this review she has written four fantasy novels which seem to be well received from the readers. The first book in the Stonewiser trilogy, Stonewiser: The Heart of the Stone is the one I read and I’ll certainly be grabbing the next one as soon as possible. It’s really good. No wonder it won the 2009 Benjamin Franklin award for best debut novel.

I’ve never attempted to get into the Robert Jordan Wheel of Time series which although looking interesting seems like a huge time investment. I feel like I’ll be reading them a whole year or something. Actually, one of the first books by Sanderson that got me hooked were the ones from the Mistborn Trilogy (I’ll take a trilogy any time – much more easy to tackle).

The story and the way it was written was very engaging. The Way of Kings audiobook costs two credits on Audible which was the reason I didn’t get it right away but I finally bit the bullet. I’ve been craving something as captivating as Mistborn was and when I hit the Play button immediately knew I shouldn’t have waited. The Way of Kings is worth the price even if you’re not an Audible subscriber and looks like it’s going to be another excellent series from Sanderson. The Way of Kings is Book 1 of the Stormlight Archive which is planed as a ten-novel series. Oh, boy.

I had big expectations for this audiobook when I stumbled upon it while browsing. It seemed very promising and largely lived up to my expectation with a few exceptions.
What Geomancer is about: Tiaan is a crystal worker who makes controllers, intricate components that control huge war machines. She lives in a world exhausted by a war against a winged race called the lyrinx. Everyone in society has their role in supporting the war effort, and if you don’t have any particular abilities which can be useful, you get sent to the front lines if you’re a man, or used as breeding specimen, giving birth to the next generation of soldiers, if you’re a woman. When Tiaan is falsely accused of sabotage, she finds herself on the run and looking for a man she’s seen in her crystal visions, her true love.

Hounded: The Iron Druid Chronicles, Book 1

Narrated by: Luke Daniels

Length: 8 hrs and 11 mins

Series: Iron Druid Chronicles, Book 1

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 04-19-11

Publisher: Brilliance Audio

Hounded is the first audiobook in The Iron Druid Chronicles series which is an urban fantasy by the relatively new author Kevin Hearne. We’re presented with a story that follows the magical adventures of the world’s last druid Atticus in modern day Arizona.

Forget about all those silly old men in robes with long white beards. Atticus definitely doesn’t fit in that stereotype, being a 21 year old youngster with red hair, a goatee and the palest skin you’re ever seen. One might think that Arizona won’t be the first choice for a place of residence for someone like him, because you know, it’s constantly sunny and hot and dessert-y. He, however has a few good reasons for choosing the USA South. The Celtic god of love Aenghus Og is after him and not because he has deep feelings for Atticus but because he’s convinced that the druid stole a magical sword that belongs to him. It turns out that Arizona is as far away from the fae gateways to the Old World which makes it difficult for the gods and their minions to catch him by surprise.
