Over the years, there has been a massive collection of excellent books. Some of these have been able to keep the reader entertained. Others have grabbed at the reader’s heartstrings and forced them to experience the character’s emotions. Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein would definitely fall within the latter category. This book has remained one of the most captivating, heartfelt and successful books of all time. It has been transformed into films, plays and even television dramas. Although it is arguable, a lot of book enthusiasts agree that the audiobook, which is narrated by Dan Stevens, is the most enjoyable way to experience the novel.

Dead Drunk: Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

Written by: Richard Johnson

Narrated by: Neil Hellegers

Length: 6 hrs and 4 mins

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 11-14-13

Publisher: Richard D. Johnson

Apparently, I’m on a zombie streak this month with yet another zombie apocalypse audiobook. Dead Drunk seemed to be a promising zombie novel that doesn’t take itself too seriously which is very refreshing considering the generally morbid and depressing nature of the post-apocalyptic genre. Johnson’s prose flowed very well which made the audiobook listening experience quite enjoyable. The character differentiation was done quite clearly by Neil Hellegers with a few noteworthy performances like the old redneck Uncle Russ, for example. Gotta have a good hillbilly character in a zombie novel!

Unabridged Audiobook

I love zombies. Well, stories about zombies that is… I’ve probably watched every zombie/post-apocalyptic movie and series in existence plus the most noteworthy books in the genre (I should probably do a guide listing the best zombie books at some point) but when a new one comes out I just can’t say no! For Braineater Jones I’m glad I didn’t because it was a hell of a lot of fun! It’s definitely not your typical survival story where a group of people is trying to battle the endless hordes of undead. That’s OK though, as there are plenty of other books that are like that.

About the author

Bram Stoker was an Irish writer and is best known for his novels and short stories. The Gothic horror novel Dracula is probably his most popular work. He lived during the Victorian and Edwardian Eras (1847 – 1912) and published Dracula in 1897.

What is Dracula about

Dracula is the original vampire story. It’s what got vampires into the public psyche, making them a subject of fascination and fear for years to come. It’s about Count Dracula’s attempt to move from Transylvania to England and the struggle of a small group led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing (no, not the one with ragged coat, long hair and crossbow) to prevent him from achieving his goal.

OK, usually I don’t start right of describing the narration experience but this time I’m going to make an exception. When I started Joyland, I thought ‘this narrator sounds weird, I don’t think I have heard him before’. Then did a little searching and turns out it’s Michael Kelly’s first audiobook performance. To be honest it didn’t seem like he knew what he was doing, at least in the beginning. The words came out a little forced and stiff. I was considering giving up on the book because I’m very easily distracted from the story if I don’t like the narrator.

World War Z: The Complete Edition (Movie Tie-in Edition): An Oral History of the Zombie War

Length: 12 hrs and 8 mins

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 05-14-13

Publisher: Random House Audio

Summary: World War Z is one of the best zombie apocalypse novels I’ve ever read. Its characters are ordinary people that happen to live in an interesting time. Those of them who lived trough the horror of the zombie war tell stories which will give you chills, but also show the good and bad in people. Despite its fictional nature this book is one of the best lessons one can learn about what really happens in a time of war. I’m not usually very fond of multiple narrator audiobooks but the performances from the cast in this updated edition fit very well with the story and make it feel so much more realistic.
