The Man In The High Castle Audiobook

Written by: Philip K. Dick

Narrated by: Jeff Cummings

Length: 9 hours and 58 minutes

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: June 2, 2015

Publisher: Brilliance Audio

While there have been many outstanding alternative history novels based on the events following WWII, none compare to Philip Dick’s The Man in the High Castle and it’s subsequent audiobook version. This novel combines fantasy with historical facts of WWII and Franklin D. Roosevelt’s failure to lead America to victory or recovery after the cessation of the war. In 1963, it won the Hugo Award for Best Novel and this says a lot about Dick’s ability to provide the listener with a compelling alternative version of history.

Length: 10 hrs and 53 mins

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 03-22-13

I started listening to The Martian with no particular expectations, other than the occasional high praises from other reviews I’ve glanced over online and my memories of the print version of the book. As it turns out, not only was it good enough to deserve a place in my personal collection, but it also got me out of the reading slump I’ve been in for some time. I felt excited about reading again. I think it takes a special kind of book to do that.

This is the one folks. The one sci-fi book to beat! I consider myself a sci-fi fan and ever since I read Dune a few years back, my view of the genre was changed forever. I’m sure the story might be ‘too much’ for some but even people that usually prefer fantasy have given Dune high praise. You could say it’s fantasy but in space and it’s nothing short of epic!

Hard Duty by Mark E. Cooper – Audiobook Review

Hard Duty - Merkiaari Wars Series

Written by: Mark E. Cooper

Narrated by: Mikael Naramore

Length: 12 hrs and 42 mins

Series: Merkiaari Wars, Book 1

Format: Unabridged

Release Date:02-18-14

Publisher: Impulse Books UK

Are you up for some awesome space opera action? Then continue reading because Hard Duty by Mark E. Cooper is just the audiobook for you. In my opinion it takes a lot of courage to start writing a space opera series because there are so many good books out there already and the fans of the genre are going to ruthlessly compare your works with other authors. I guess that’s true for all genres but it’s kind of hard to pull off a good space opera that’s somewhat original and adds something to the genre. However, Mr. Cooper seems to be on the right path with Hard Duty, the first novel in the Merkiaari Wars series.

Series: Superheroes in Prose, Book 1

Release Date:08-01-13

Publisher: Sevan Paris

Superheroes in Prose: Welcome to Prose is a fun little audiobook that will get a few chuckles out of you, or at least it did it for me. I didn’t have any expectations for it and the title of the book sounded a little strange to me especially the Prose part. Turns out it’s the name of the fictional city where there’s an unusual clustering of superheroes per capita. This audiobook is really just the set up for the series and introduces the main superheroes that clash in epic battles with the city of Prose as the backdrop.

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 03-11-14

First of all, look at that book cover! Isn’t it gorgeous? OK, the omnibus edition of Sand by Hugh Howey is one of those audiobooks that made me think “Wow, this is really special!” after reading them. I don’t know if it’s the unique post appocaliptic setting, the beautiful, loneliness-inducing prose, the tough and likable characters or something other that’s intangible. I’m pretty sure Hugh Howey is some sort of wizard or at least is utilizing some sort of subconscious triggers that make me like his audiobook so much. 😀

The Island is a short, two and a half hours long novella that surprised me with some clever writing and after finishing it I found myself wanting to see more, to know what happens to the characters next. That was quite a different outcome from my sneaking suspicions when I got it at first – here we go, just another Young Adult book. Not the case it turns out.

Warning! You’re entering serious geek territory! Only authorized geeky personnel is to proceed beyond this point! OK, I’m kidding but seriously, this is some awesome hardcore sci-fi stuff. When a few years ago I started listening to audiobooks, one of the first books that I listened to was the original METAtropolis and I can say without any doubt that it was that moment I got completely hooked on the medium. If you haven’t read it, it’s a collection of five novellas specifically written for this book by award-winning sci-fi authors and narrated by actors from the awesome Battlestar Galactica TV show and other A Team voice talent. I just can’t recommend it enough. After hungrily plowing through it I immediately got my little hands on the next installment of this series – METAtropolis: Cascadia and indulged in some more amazing science fiction from these talented authors. That was somewhere around 2011 or 2012, I think. Imagine my recent reaction when I found out there’s a new third book.
