I’ve never actually read the original Legend of Sleepy Hollow until now, so this audiobook rendition was my first experience with the American classic. If you like me happen to have not read the legend, it tells the story of Ichabod Crane – a teacher in the Dutch settlement of Tarry Town, more often called by its’ residents as Sleepy Hollow. He among other men from the town is courting Katrina Van Tassel – the young and only daughter of a wealthy farmer.
On a pleasant autumn evening, Ichabod leaves Van Tassel’s party at their farm and is attacked by the Headless Horseman – the most infamous spectre in the Hollow. Spooky! No, really, don’t expect to be scared by the story, especially if you’re a horror fan.
It’s a short and enjoyable story that can be read in one quick listening session which is always nice. The narration by Tom Mison (who also plays Ichabod Crane on the Sleepy Hollow TV show) is very good. I thought the way his English accent fits with the story is a little odd – it’s an American classic after all, but other than that, he delivers a solid performance.
There are other audiobook recordings of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow out there but I think this one is the most professionally done and if you’re looking for the best way to enjoy this classic short story, you don’t have to look any further.
