Screw Everyone is one of the few comedy audiobooks I’ve listened to and I’m usually not very excited about reading someones’ memoirs but this time it was definitely worth it and I enjoyed the whole audiobook. It’s narrated by Ophira herself which makes it that much more personal. There’s also the fact that she doesn’t hide anything about her life and describes every part of it with a unique self-deprecating sense of humor that is sure to put a smile on your face.
Quite early in her life Ophira decides to follow her mother’s advice and be a “weed”, meaning to thrive regardless of the environment. But that doesn’t mean she won’t try everything life has to offer before choosing where to settle down. After finishing high-school she goes on a trip to Australia for a year, comes back to Canada, jumping around from one city to the next, trying to find what’s right for her and eventually moves to the US to become a comedian.
Now, summed up like this it doesn’t sound like a particularly exciting story but if you decide to read the book you’ll notice the good writing that keeps a good flow and just makes the experience fun and interesting. Ophira is probably the single author I’ve read that is so open about her sex life. When you think about it, that’s a perfectly normal thing to talk about especially since a big chunk of the book is about 20-something Ophira (it’s the ‘finding yourself’ age after all). I can see how some people won’t like this, so if you get uncomfortable from books that have sexual content, it will be better to skip this one.
A few words about the narration. It certainly shows throughout the audiobook that Ophira is an actress. She consistently nails the intonation, the tempo and makes it feel like more than a memoir – like we’re drinking in a bar somewhere and she’s sharing all the weird stuff she’s been through.
As a whole the Screw Everyone audiobook is a good listen for several reasons – it’s funny, refreshing, makes you think about some of the decisions you’ve made in life and how they change everything, and it has a very romantic tearjerker of an ending. You should definitely get it!
