To Kill a Mockingbird

Written by: Harper Lee

Narrated by: Sissy Spacek

Length: 12 hrs and 17 mins

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 07-08-14

Publisher: Harper Audio

To Kill a Mockingbird is a classic book for many reasons. It tells a story of great beauty and savage inequities through the eyes of a young girl. Most people have already read it at some point either by choice or because they had to for their schoolwork. It wasn’t included in our high school literature classes, which is fine because I don’t think I would’ve appreciated it as much as I do now. Considering I’m generally not a huge classics fan (some of them are really overrated) I’m glad to have the To Kill a Mockingbird audiobook in my collection as I’ll probably re-read it again at some point.

Written by: Ophira Eisenberg

Narrated by: Ophira Eisenberg

Length: 7 hrs and 31 mins

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date:02-18-14

Publisher: Audible Studios

Screw Everyone is one of the few comedy audiobooks I’ve listened to and I’m usually not very excited about reading someones’ memoirs but this time it was definitely worth it and I enjoyed the whole audiobook. It’s narrated by Ophira herself which makes it that much more personal. There’s also the fact that she doesn’t hide anything about her life and describes every part of it with a unique self-deprecating sense of humor that is sure to put a smile on your face.

Publisher: Sevan Paris

Superheroes in Prose: Welcome to Prose is a fun little audiobook that will get a few chuckles out of you, or at least it did it for me. I didn’t have any expectations for it and the title of the book sounded a little strange to me especially the Prose part. Turns out it’s the name of the fictional city where there’s an unusual clustering of superheroes per capita. This audiobook is really just the set up for the series and introduces the main superheroes that clash in epic battles with the city of Prose as the backdrop.

The Atlantis Gene: The Origin Mystery, Book 1

Written by: A. G. Riddle

Narrated by: Stephen Bel Davies

Length: 15 hrs and 44 mins

Series: The Origin Mystery, Book 1

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 03-18-14

Publisher: Audible Studios

The Atlantis Gene is the debut novel of author A.G.Riddle and it successfully combines history, science, conspiracy theories, tech, evolution, and thrilling action into one. It isn’t perfect by any means, but contrary to some of the other reviews I’ve read I found it to be a very enjoyable audiobook.
Some of the reviews I’ve seen were really funny to me for several reasons. For example, they complain about how the beginning is too confusing with all the different subplots ‘thrown’ at the reader. Uhm, hello? Have you not read a thriller in your life before? This isn’t something that hasn’t been done before and in fact it’s a classic formula for the genre. If it’s too confusing for you maybe you should start with something easier, like, I don’t know, the alphabet?

First of all, look at that book cover! Isn’t it gorgeous? OK, the omnibus edition of Sand by Hugh Howey is one of those audiobooks that made me think “Wow, this is really special!” after reading them. I don’t know if it’s the unique post appocaliptic setting, the beautiful, loneliness-inducing prose, the tough and likable characters or something other that’s intangible. I’m pretty sure Hugh Howey is some sort of wizard or at least is utilizing some sort of subconscious triggers that make me like his audiobook so much. 😀

The Island is a short, two and a half hours long novella that surprised me with some clever writing and after finishing it I found myself wanting to see more, to know what happens to the characters next. That was quite a different outcome from my sneaking suspicions when I got it at first – here we go, just another Young Adult book. Not the case it turns out.

“I don’t know how many hours of my school years were spent studying the Missouri Compromise or the War of the Roses, but it was vastly more than I was ever encouraged or allowed to give to the history of eating, sleeping, having sex, or endeavouring to be amused.”
Bill Bryson – At Home

Bryson finally has his wish to spend time studying the history of these things and the results make for an enticing read. Indeed, if someone had offered me money to listen to a man talk about rooms and objects in his house for 17 hours I would have, without doubt, refused. Unless they told me that this man was Bill Bryson. Now that my friends is an altogether different proposition. I’ve read all of Bryson’s works, from his early escapades with the English language through living and travelling around Britain, North America and an adventure down under.

About the author

Bram Stoker was an Irish writer and is best known for his novels and short stories. The Gothic horror novel Dracula is probably his most popular work. He lived during the Victorian and Edwardian Eras (1847 – 1912) and published Dracula in 1897.

What is Dracula about

Dracula is the original vampire story. It’s what got vampires into the public psyche, making them a subject of fascination and fear for years to come. It’s about Count Dracula’s attempt to move from Transylvania to England and the struggle of a small group led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing (no, not the one with ragged coat, long hair and crossbow) to prevent him from achieving his goal.

High Moor

Written by: Graeme Reynolds

Narrated by: Chris Barnes

Length: 7 hrs and 15 mins

Unabridged Audiobook

Release Date: 10-21-13

Publisher: Dynamic Ram Audio Production

Graeme Reynolds has been writing for a few years now (since 2008 to be exact) and has had more than thirty short stories published in various online magazines and anthologies. In 2011 his first novel, High Moor, was published.

What is High Moor about

If you didn’t guess from the cover, High Moor is a book about werewolves. What you get from the blurb doesn’t do the story justice and makes it look like just another urban fantasy/paranormal mind candy novel. The plot is actually fairly complex for a werewolf story and there are some nice twists and turns. Two of the main characters, John Simpson and Steven Wilkinson have to deal with a dangerous werewolf. That much we get even from the book blurb. There’s much more to it, though. This part of the plot unfolds halfway into the book. Before that there’s some solid character building and we see John as a child living through some horrible events and a little younger version of police officer Steven Wilkinson being hit by the reality that werewolves exist. We get to know them quite well and develop a solid relationship with them which makes the final moments of the book even more exciting.
