Over the years, the world has seen a diverse collection of fantasy epics. Many of these tales follow the same routine and yet manage to individualize themselves in some form of another. This is especially true, when it comes to J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring. This is the first book, within The Lord of the Rings series, and it is still considered by many to be the best of all. In fact, some critics and readers suggest that the book is one of the best within the entire genre. No matter where you stand in this argument, it is truly hard to deny that fact that The Fellowship of the Ring is a treasurable and truly unique experience, especially in audiobook form, which should never be avoided.

With modern technology, there are plenty of excellent ways to experience this wonderful tale. Reading the book and checking out the film are definitely viable options, but I wholeheartedly believe that the audiobook may be an even more enjoyable experience. Much of this has to do with the success and value of the source material, but Rob Inglis and his immaculate vocal performance should also be credited. Below, you’ll find a comprehensive review for The Fellowship of the Ring audiobook. You can check out the reviews for the second and third audiobooks here and here, respectively.

The Narration

As someone, who has spent an enormous amount of time listening to audiobooks, I can tell you upfront that they can be hit or miss. In order for an audiobook to be a success, each and every variable needs to be perfect. A fantastic narrator cannot bring glory to terrible source material and vice versa. This is where The Fellowship of the Ring truly excels. Not only is the source material fantastic, but also the narration is right on the money. Rob Inglis may not be as prolific and experienced as many of the market’s other narrators, but it never shows. In fact, in some categories, Rob delivers a better performance than the narrators, who’ve been in the game for a lengthier period of time.

So, where should I start? Rob Inglis has entirely immersed himself in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and this becomes evident from the very beginning. He puts a substantial amount of passion into the performance and helps to pass on the emotions of the characters onto the listener. When they’re upset, afraid or laughing it up, the listener will be able to feel it right in their bones. With the Lord of the Rings series, the characters are ultimately the heart and soul of the story and this is where Rob Inglis truly excels.

It is entirely obvious that Rob has become a part of the series and knows each and every one of these characters by heart. Whether he is reading dialogue from Frodo or Legolas, the character is easily distinguishable and the listener won’t have a bit of difficulty determining the difference. This isn’t always the case with other narrators, but Inglis pulls it off with graces and sheer professionalism.

This is truly one of the longest audiobooks I have ever listened to. I have attempted to sit through over lengthy audiobooks, but eventually gave up, before I made it to the final chapter. With The Fellowship of the Ring, this was never a problem. Despite expanding over 19 hours, the story remains intriguing and fresh throughout the duration. Rob Inglis manages to keep the story paced perfectly and helps to keep the story interesting with his quirky, memorable accents.

Finally, I must say that the unabridged audio was completely flawless. Never once did I hear a flaw or any type of blemish, which could’ve diminished the enjoyment of the experience. The entire audio from beginning to end was immaculate and very pleasurable.

The Story

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first book of the Lord of the Rings 6 volume saga. In this epic tale, J.R.R. Tolkien creates characters that the reader will be able to form a personal relationship without difficulty. The Hobbits, Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee are definitely loveable creatures that will charm your pants off. Frodo discovers the secret that Gandalf had been hiding from everyone, which involved the Ring.

Frodo’s life was getting ready to take a detour, as he would set out on an adventure that would take him through mysterious lands and mountainous terrain. Frodo’s good friend Sam Baggins joins Frodo on his journey to save the Ring from the clutches of Gollum. The journey would by no means be easy, but these two hobbits were not willing to let anything get in their way.

No one can tell a fantasy like Tolkien and his expertise shows in this magical story. As a superb narrator, Rob Inglis proves to the listener that he has the skills to give this series full justice and he does just that. When you are ready for a lengthy quest with lots of knightly adventure, be sure to grab a copy of The Fellowship of the Ring.

Overall

When it comes down to it, everyone should take the opportunity to catch the Lord of the Rings and relive the story in one form or another. I must admit that I’ve watched the movies and have also read the books. Both experiences were very enjoyable and I could easily recommend them, as well. However, there is something truly special about the audiobooks, which set them apart from their counterparts. This is especially true, when it comes to the series’ first book, The Fellowship of the Ring.

The source material, which is so ravishing, has remained unchanged and is still relevant and charming in today’s society. Of course, the narration of Rob Inglis needs to be credited here. He might not be the most prolific narrator in the industry, but his performance here is truly immaculate and captivating. Whether you’re looking to experience the series in a new way or want to check it out for the first time, you cannot lose with the audiobook version. I highly recommend you take the time to explore The Fellowship of the Ring audiobook right now! You will not be disappointed.
